Otranto Otranto is called "Porta d’Oriente"(doorway to the orient), because it is the most eastern town of Italy; and it’s a town rich of history, of intrigue and natural beauty. (it was in fact a byzantine and gothic center). In 1480 it was conquered from the Turks, who massacred the population during the Battle of Otranto,
killing 800 persons: these are in fact the blessed martyrs who are remembered every year on the 15th of august. |
